Steve Jobs: CEO of the Decade - FORTUNE on CNNMoney.com

Why him? Steve Jobs revived Apple and remade entire industries, defying the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression -- and his own serious health problems. More
Steve Jobs: CEO of the decade

My hero.

I'll need to pick up the print version of Fortune to add to my Apple collection. I have boxes of old magazines and other media about apple, primarily from 1998-2002.

It was during those years that the gap between my love for Apple and Apple's general "coolness" was greatest. (I was very passionate about the company, and it was before the iPod or their current successes that now makes them "cool" to most people)

My old neighbors in New York battle the obnoxious new bar in the area by hanging out soiled underwear

The Cooper Square Hotel opened up right behind my old NY apartment. As I expected, the neighbors are not happy about the noise from the bar.

Thanks to Roy for the link!

Flash is such a piece of crap. I'm glad it's not on the iPhone and I hope it never is

About six months ago, a friend who was working closely along side adobe's flash application development team told me that they received a prototype of Flash for iPhone. The prototype allowed the iPhone to have less than half an hour of battery life using flash. They then sent the prototype to apple and suggested incorporating this prototype iPhone flash into the iPhone OS in the next update.

Apparently apple sent this letter back thanking them for being interested in developing a working version of flash for the iphone but because the prototype is so processor intensive, and awful for battery life, they would not include it with their OS because it is just not good enough. They suggested using the gpu instead of the processor to render flash. Then they suggested building a seperate app for flash and web browsing because there was no way apple could endorse flash integration on the iphone in its current state.

Adobe apparently didn't want to release the app under their name either and it never showed up in the app store.

A long story in short: Adobe sucks at programming, then apple told them they sucked at programming. If they want to release that shit under the name adobe so be it, but it sure isn't going to be endorsed by Apple.

Flash sucks. It takes forever to load stuff. Flash videos are rarely high quality. The fans on my computer always jump to full speed, my lap catches on fire. And often it crashes.

I really wish Quicktime had won the online video battle. The quality and experience are far superior. Quicktime just doesn't have the penetration flash does.

But I'm glad it's not on my iPhone. The last thing I need is for my iPhone to be even hotter or have an even shorter battery life.

A 70-foot, female blue whale that officials believe was struck by a ship has washed ashore on the Northern California coast

A 70-foot, female blue whale that officials believe was struck by a ship has washed ashore on the Northern California coast in what scientists are calling a rare occurrence.

blue_whale_beached.jpgOfficials think this 70-foot female blue whale was struck by a ship. It washed ashore Monday on the Northern California coast near Fort Bragg.

The whale was first spotted on shore near Fort Bragg in Mendocino County on Monday night, hours after an ocean survey vessel reported hitting a whale a few miles away, said Joe Cordaro, a wildlife biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's marine fisheries service.

I totally want to go check this out. But the drive to Fort Bragg is brutal.

Interesting: if you request late checkout from a hotel in Vegas, they void your keys instantly. You can't leave and return

Interesting twist on this. I think they do this so drunk people can't call from a bar/club and request late checkout for the next night. If you want it, you have to be in your room and then request it. Avoids some abuse maybe?

MIT students take space photos on $150 budget. Software isn't the only way to build great things on small budgets

Two MIT students have successfully photographed the earth from space on a strikingly low budget of $148. Perhaps more significantly, they managed to accomplish this feat using components available off-the-shelf to the average layperson, opening the doors for a new generation of amateur space enthusiasts. The pair plan to launch again soon and hope that their achievements will inspire teachers and students to pursue similar endeavors.

One of the greatest things about being a software engineer is if you can dream it, you can build it. Especially today with resources like the Rackspace Cloud, it's easier than ever to turn your product vision into reality.

In the past, I've had ideas for consumer electronics or other hardware devices. But it's much harder to build something physical and get it out to people.

Mad props to these MIT students for accomplishing so much with little money and only off the shelf components. I hope one day I have time to build physical things.
