The Lovemakers new single, Love Is Dead, is single of the week, free on iTunes

I love these guys. Awesome synth pop, reminds me of my favorites from the 80s.

They are an Oakland band, and the female lead is from Stanford.

Download their new song for free here.

How to fold a world-record-setting paper airplane

Back in high school I was the president of the "Aviation club." I was genuinely interested in aeronautics and at one point thought that's what I would do professionally.

We did some cool events in the club, went to museums, tours of manufacturing plants.

We also did some lame stuff, like a paper airplane content in the gym. Doesn't seem to lame now though, this airplane is badass!

Duracell Instant Chargers let you carry extra power for your iPhone anywhere you go

Wow I need one of these. My iPhone does not last a full day when I'm out of the office. I can't find them in stock anywhere though.

Ten Characteristics of Great Companies by Fred Wilson

1) Great companies are constantly innovating and delighting their customers/users with new products and services.

2) Great companies are built to last and be independent and sustainable. Great companies don't sell out.

3) Great companies make lots of money but leave even more money on the table for their users and partners.

4) Great companies don't look elsewhere for ideas. They develop their ideas internally and are copied by others.

5) Great companies infect their users/customers with their brand. They turn their users and customers into marketing/salesforces.

6) Great companies are led by entrepreneurs who own a meaningful piece of the business. As such, they make decisions based on long term business needs and objectives not short term goals.

7) Great companies have a global mindset. They treat every person in the world as a potential customer/user.

8) Great companies are attempting to change the world in addition to making money.

9) Great companies are not reliant on any one person to deliver their value proposition.

10) Great companies put the customer/user first above any other priority.

Some really great points on how to build a successful company.

iPhone app wins Microsoft's own app contest

Microsoft drew embarrassment this weekend when itrevealed that the winner of its app development contest was an iPhone app. Although 14 out of the 15 young companies at the Startup Weekend event wrote for a Microsoft platform, it was an iPhone contact memorization app, Learn That Name, which won the most votes from those at the competition. The victory came despite having just 48 hours to build and test the app and should lead to a $3 download when it reaches the App Store.

Do you need to get massive amounts of data to or from Amazon S3? USPS is still the way to do it.

amazon web servicesAmazon has announced a new option for users of Amazon Web Services called AWS Import/Export. This new Import/Export option allows you to mail a hard drive to Amazon and either have the contents placed into a S3 bucket or the current contents of a bucket placed onto the hard drive.

Pretty interesting. Even in 2009, you can't beat snail mail for moving massive amounts of data.

The increase in bandwidth we're seen in the past 10 years has enabled streaming video, even at true HD levels. Many products on the web exist now only because we have the bandwidth to support them.

But no matter how much bandwidth increases, we'll never beat snail mail since the amount of data large organizations need to move will also increase just as fast.

How to Dice an Onion Like a Pro - from The Kitchn

We've been cooking at home quite a bit, and end up dicing an onion most nights. I learned from my mom, and can do it pretty well.

But there was one trick in this video that I didn't know about: keep the root end of the onion on as you dice. It will hold the onion together as you cut in the different directions.
